What is Depression?

Often called Major Depression, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia. What does it feel like? Some people with depression feel overwhelming depletion, helplessness and inadequacy. Other people talk about unrelenting, harsh self-criticism. They feel inferior, worthless. They feel like they have failed to live up to expectations. They have difficulty expressing anger. They fear the loss of approval and loss of love from important people in their life. They fear loss of acceptance and their self-esteem suffers badly.

Here are common symptoms of depression:

  • Sadness, irritability and anxiety
  • Losing interest in things you enjoyed
  • Change in your weight (up or down)
  • Changing sleep
  • Dragging around all day feeling fatigued
  • Feeling worthless, guilty
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or of suicide.

If you are experiencing more than a couple of these symptoms, then you should seek further evaluation. I can provide that evaluation and I can also provide treatment.

The therapy I provide, psychodynamic therapy, is a proven, effective treatment for depression. I won’t simply tell you to “Turn your frown upside down.” We’ll work together to address the causes of your depression and the negative experiences that have come with it.
